Canarsee plumbing tips for homeowners

Usually people are shocked at the aftermath of insignificant leaks in faucets or toilets. Leaks that are hardly noticeable can cost you hundreds of dollars in water bills. If you don't want your money to go down the drain, fix your leaks as soon as possible. If you do not have any leaks or think that there aren't any, invite a professional plumber to do a full household check-up to find leaks that are not perceptible to the naked eye.

Water heater is on the top list of necessary household appliances. A good professional will always check if there is any sediment which occurs at the bottom of the heater, because it could hamper the performance. Also he or she will examine the drain valve for signs of leakage and the anode rods for corrosion.

As well as other check ups, water heater burner inspection is also very necessary. In order to tell if the burner is still good, check the flame under the water heater, and if it's blue with yellow tips, its okay, but if it turns out to be yellow or the layer of soot and carbon are seen, then most likely it is clogged. At his point it’s time to call a professional to inspect the situation.

Water heater is not repairable once it starts leaking in its housing, at this point it could only be replaced. How ever, in order for this leaking to occur, it’s going to take about 15-20 years (so there is nothing to worry about). If your water heater is very old, you're mostly likely going to replace it even before it break. Systems made in last 10-15 years are much more powerful and productive than older models.

Give your sump pump a little check up before heavy spring rains begin, to make sure it's in working condition. Watch for accumulation of sand or other litter in the sump pit. All this waste can wedge the pump and burn down its motor. Connect a garden hose to the connection point of the pump, to check if the pumps discharge pipe is not clogged. The pipe is in clean if the water runs through the other end.

If your pump has been overwhelmed from heavy rains, think about getting a battery-operated back up sump pump. Make sure rain gutters and downspouts are clear of any kind of waste and litter. Water overflowing from clogged gutters collects around your home's base and leaks into your basement. Water condition changes with time.  We can help you stay drinking good water by examining your water for free and rate the system you currently have.
